Correct score predictions, explained

Correct score is the hardest prediction in football: even the best models get the exact score right only now and then. Here is why, and how to read a score prediction so it is actually useful.

Why exact scores are hard

A match has dozens of possible scores, and even the most common one rarely happens more than one time in eight. A model can read a match well and still miss the exact score, because one goal more or less changes everything.

That is why a score prediction should never be read on its own: it is one plausible outcome out of many, not a promise.

Which scores come up most

In the big European leagues a handful of results cover a large share of matches:

  1. 1

    1-1

The most common draw. When two teams are close, it is often among the top scores.

  2. 2

    1-0 / 0-1

Tight games with few chances often end with a single goal.

  3. 3

    2-1 / 1-2

The typical result when both teams score but one is a little stronger.

  4. 4

    2-0 / 0-2

Usually a sign of a clear favourite with a solid defence.

How to read a score prediction

  1. 1

    Start with the probabilities

Home win, draw and away win percentages show how confident the model is. A score only makes sense next to them.

  2. 2

    Look at total goals

Whether a match is likely to be tight or open tells you more than one exact score.

  3. 3

    Close match, likely draw

When the two sides are level, the draw is often more likely than it looks.

  4. 4

    Thin data, less certainty

Cups, early-season games and lower leagues come with less data, so treat their scores with extra care.

How Football AI builds the score

Football AI estimates how many goals each team is likely to score and runs 10,000 simulations of the match. The score in the app comes from those simulations and always sits next to the win, draw and loss probabilities, so you can see how open the match really is.

No sure wins

Sites that promise sure correct scores are selling luck. No model can know the exact result in advance. Use score predictions to understand a match, and if you bet, only use money you can afford to lose.

Key takeaways

  • Even the most common score happens only now and then.
  • 1-1, 1-0 and 2-1 are among the most common results.
  • Read the score together with the win, draw and loss probabilities.
  • Nobody can offer sure correct scores.
